*Proximity is equal to twice the Line Cast
**If a creature that exists beyond fishing (e.g. dragon turtle, salamander, etc.) is used, then add their CR times their Size Category to their Stamina (Tiny = 1; Gargantuan = 6)
General Mechanics
Hooking Mechanics:
bait influences fish size/type
location influences fish size/type
Reeling Mechanics:
Caster: d20 + STR/DEX Modifier + Rod Modifier
A Critical Success allows the caster to add an additional roll
A Critical Failure adds a tally to the fish's Escape Counter (EC)
Fish: d20 + STR Modifier
A Critical Success allows the fish to add an additional roll
A Critical Failure gives the caster advantage on their next roll
Escape Counter
When a fish's EC completely fills, they escape the hook and may swim away
Other Notes:
Other players can assist—usually through magical means. This can be through spells like Shape Water, Mage Hand, Minor Illusion, etc.
So depending on the circumstances, you could focus on wearing out the fish or forcing it closer at a higher risk of breaking your line
Use downtimes to research certain fish and obtain permanent bonuses when trying to reel one in
Once a certain average threshold is passed, fish can be automatically assumed caught without rolling
Fish can now choose to roll at a disadvantage to double their chances of adding an Escape Counter
Limited amount of casts per time-slot. This can be increased by the use of bait to get "faster catches". This can also be increased by a random chance mechanic of "good fishing spots" that can either be located in downtime or found naturally through chance.
